The term API (Application Programming Interface) was first introduced in 1968 as a computing interface that defines interactions between multiple software intermediaries.

In recent years, we have witnessed an exponential growth of this technology, based on a trend of sharing information quickly and securely between platforms, reaching 22,000 registered APIs in 2018.
